Well, I just got the word. In my inbox I received a notification that one of my affiliate sites has been enabled for mobile first indexing. What does this mean? This means that it is a DAMN GOOD THING I switched to build all my websites as responsive websites several years back, before the trend started(it breaks my heart to see websites developed in the past five years that are not responsive or mobile friendly). So sad.
Anywho, Google has begun rolling out mobile first indexing and I couldn’t be happier about it. You see, everyone has been talking a good game about being mobile friendly and responsive, but no-one has been talking about Mobile First! It’s been known that web traffic has moved from clunky old desktops to smartphones (if you’re unaware, welcome back from your coma).
Several years ago people discussed how web traffic was going to become more prevalent on mobile devices, and it obviously has. But the thing is, Google was still looking at and indexing the desktop version of websites and that’s obviously pretty silly, don’t you think? I knew it would be a matter of time before they started to index based on the experience of the majority of traffic, it makes perfect sense yet people didn’t prepare for it! So you see, if your website was recently built and it’s not mobile friendly then you may have some issues with your search engine traffic. You may see a decrease in visitors coming from Google now, which always sucks.
So, what you do now that mobile first indexing is not a discussion and is a reality? Well, first is do a website SEO audit. This means, look at your website as Google will be seeing and indexing it. From a mobile point of you. If you do not have a mobile version or responsive website, then “God help you”. Or I can help you! Get in touch ;). If you do have a mobile version where it is A separate version of your website, then consider developing a new website that is responsive and look great on all mediums, this include desktop tablets and smart phones.
By being prepared for the mobile first index, I am very happy and I am not overly concerned about this big change. In fact, I am optimistic that it’s going to help a lot of my websites as I feel like I took the necessary steps years ago to prepare for this. I am confident that this change is for the better in all aspects, businesses, consumers and the internet in general. So do your best to make sure your website is prepared for Google’s mobile first index, and if it isn’t, then get in touch with All Things Digital,Your favorite New York digital marketing agency, and PPC company!
If you have a website then you know how important it is for you to keep it updated. After all, this is one of the many things you can do to try to do to get a better ranking. But did you know that your site speed can affect your ranking as well? Your site speed certainly comes in as one of the 200 signals Google uses to determine the ranking of your site. The main reason for this is because Google wants users to have the best possible experience when they are browsing on their search engine. If users were continually faced with slow loading websites, then this will lower the authority Google has on the internet, and people would be less likely to use Google.
Google also wants you to have a fast site for mobile users and desktop users because the algorithm crosses over on to both. The main problem that people experience is that they make sure that their desktop site is fast but they don’t put the same effort into their mobile site. This can really impede the traffic you get on a day to day basis. You would be surprised at how much it can affect your sites performance overall. After all, if your site is slow, Google won’t list it as highly and even if people do click on your site, they will probably click off before it all loads up if you don’t have a good site speed.
Now more than ever it is important for you to have a good site speed. Let All Things Digital get your site speed as fast as it can be!
If you want to give your site a search engine results boost then you should certainly consider doing some backlink building. The first thing you need to understand is that Google has an algorithm that helps them to define the ranking of each and every site. I was reviewing a client’s website tonight, and I wanted to take a peek at how it was performing speed-wise. Now this site was developed on my own server, and then I migrated the WordPress site to my clients hosting package. So I had the site running in Tip-Top shape and it was very quickly loading on my server package, but it did not seem to be performing as well on my clients server. So I started to investigate, and I noticed that the site was not being properly compressed by my clients host.
The tool I used to determine that the clients hosting was not configured the same as mine, was a site called http://checkgzipcompression.com. By utilizing this site, you will instantly find out whether your site is gzip compressed or not. When I moved the site from my host to his hosts they did not have the proper compression module enabled. Now, I will try not to get too technical here, but basically the site was not performing as fast as it was on my hosting package.
One thing that you can do to very quickly speed up your website is to enable gzip. This process can be a very simple one and can cause dramatic increases in your site’s speed. In the case of my client, the website was 79.5% lighter, which means the page has to load less than a quarter the amount of data per page that it had to without the simple gzip enabled! That is huge!
So, here are the steps you need to test your website!
Step 1: Visit http://checkgzipcompression.com
Step 2: Enter your website url and hit enter to start the test
Step 3: Now you will quickly see whether or not GZIP is enabled. If it says you are blessed, GZIP is enabled! Then your site should be loading pretty quickly. If it gives a sad face, and says your compression is not enabled, then you too should have that same sad face. LOL
Step 4: Visit the root folder of your website on your hosting package and find the .htaccess file. (you may need to enable “show hidden files” checkbox in your file manager. You also may need to create one if there isn’t one already.
Step5: Download a copy of your original .htaccess file for a backup, or simply back it up on your server.
Step6: Paste the below code into your .htaccess file and click save
Step7: Re-test your site and smile knowing that your site is probably loading in a fraction of the time it was 10 minutes ago 🙂
Make sure you BACKUP your HTACCESS file! If you don’t you can break your website and may need assistance repairing it!
Google loves to provide fast sites with great content to search traffic. So every improvement you can make is worthwhile if your sites traffic is important to you. There are several other tools I use for this same purpose with different applications. Maybe I will do another post discussing these other options!
Please note, the below htaccess code also adds expires to files, which lets browsers know to not load them new every time a person visits your site. This speeds up the site alot as well. Any questions or comments, please use the form below to get in touch!

So I just got back from Disney World in Orlando Florida yesterday, and it was an amazing experience. Like all of you, I am an entrepreneur and am proud to have been able to take my family on a Disney Vacation solely from money I have made in my own business! The trip was arranged by Erica at LittleDoleWhips.com, and she made the vacation planning, well, non-existent (thanks!).
Now, because I never seem to stop working, the whole entire time I was at Disney had my wheels spinning in regards to what I can learn from Disney for my business, and YOURS! And there was a lot to learn from Disney, in every way shape and form. So here are some Business Tips I Learned From Disney World that I feel can help any business…
First thing I love about Disney is their devotion to utilizing technology. Disney has a “My Disney Experience” app which had all of the information that pertains to my trip in one app, and I mean everything! If you’ve never experienced the “My Disney Experience” app, it blew me away. And I myself am a pretty techy guy and consider myself somewhat hard to impress in that aspect. The Disney app had all of my meal plans listed, all of the photos taken by photographers in the park, my complete itinerary and even had a gps-enabled map for each and every park! There was so many features and aspects of our vacation that I could manage, modify, cancel or add via the app, it was simply incredible. You can tweak your Disney trip on the fly constantly via your smartphone.
Also, if you get the Memory Maker package, you can get pictures taken throughout the park and within minutes you have the full HD resolution version in the app available for download and sharing with friends and family. This includes not only pictures, you also get edited pictures where they superimpose Disney characters into the pictures with you, as well as placing you in HD videos that depict you with characters, on rides and off. Simply amazing! The magic band (a bracelet) that you receive beforehand links everything to you. Your food, your photos, your fast pass rides and your location, everything! Many procedures are automated via technology, and this makes everything more efficient.
So when considering your business, the following questions may come up:
I am sure you can, in fact I am 110% sure you can! Small and large businesses can and should utilize technology every moment they can.
Another aspect about Disney that showed me they really know their stuff, is their retail skills. As far as retail, they are super smart when it comes to selling products. Other theme parks really need to take a look at Disney, because they are super smart. When you go on rides at other parks, you go on the ride, and then get off the ride and walk to your next destination. Disney is super smart and they have their rides exiting into gift shops. So if you love the ride experience you were just on, you can immediately expect to walk into a store that is marketing all products that pertain to that particular ride. So if you were just on a ride that had the seven dwarfs in it, you can expect to exit into a gift store selling Snow White and Seven Dwarfs memorabilia, pictures, clothing, all of that stuff. It’s very smart and anyone can learn from that lesson!
So how can this idea improve your business? Once your client has experienced your service, they should immediately:
Another amazing thing about Disney that any entrepreneur can utilize, is paying attention to detail. You can’t have an authentic experience with anything, if you don’t cover EVERY ASPECT of that experience. For example, when you go to Disney and are in The Little Mermaid’s “Under The Sea” ride, there are bubbles projected everywhere. All of the characters look like they are under water in their movement, you hear water swoosh sounds, and everywhere you look there are coral, fish and sea creatures which confirm in your mind that you are under water. You don’t see exposed I-beams, you don’t see screws or bolts on the wall, you don’t see a bad spackle job or paint job, it is 100% authentic! There is NO DETAIL MISSED. And that’s what gives you the full experience and makes your mind say “okay, I feel like I am under the sea right now.” Obviously we were not wet, but everywhere you look made you feel like you’re underwater with their level of attention to detail. This is what makes Disney a world-class business in my opinion. Take for example the ride “Soarin” at Epcot. While you are flying over a field of flowers, Disney puts the aroma and scent of flowers in the air, when you are flying over Africa and the deserts, you actually smelled dirt in the air, that is a level of detail that cannot be matched.
So how can you apply this to your business? What does your business do? How does your business give your clients “The Full Experience” you would like it too? If you own a brick and mortar location, what is the look and feel you would like your business to have? Once you know the feeling you want to convey, go beyond simply a decent paint job and posters on the wall!
The Main Experience should be your businesses world class service! Going the extra mile with the ideas above won’t be cheap, and they don’t have to be Disney or cartoony, but these small details will make your business experience that much more authentic to your customer. It will separate your business from the next business that has a decent paint job and pictures on the wall!
Another clearly defined aspect of Disney, is its employees. There wasn’t a single Disney employee that did not greet us with a smile and they were all EXTREMELY helpful. When ever I had a question, no matter where I was, as long as I saw someone with a name tag I anticipated a very helpful and friendly response. Even when I felt my question was a dumb question, I knew I wouldn’t feel dumb asking it. That is making your customers feel truly comfortable, and that is true customer support!
How can you be sure to give the same experience to your customers?
The old saying “there are no stupid questions” can really make someone feel comfortable completely educating themselves on and about your business.
Many of these things I notice seem very simple. That is, the concepts are simple but applying them can take a little bit of thinking and head scratching. You would be hard pressed to not be able to learn from most of these tips, no matter what business you are in though!
The Disney money machine was not made overnight. But we can benefit from their almost 50 years of experience! Maybe making a tangible plan can help you to do so. Writing concepts down on paper make them more actionable than say, bookmarking this page and forgetting about it!
Write it down, make a plan and then start to implement. Even if it takes a year or two to get these things going, it will happen much sooner if you write it down and take that first step! And that can make for some very happy customers, in a very short amount of time! Such as myself and my family are after visiting Disney World in Orlando Florida! And it is no coincidence that within 24 hours of getting home from Disney my wife is already making plans to go back this year! They did their job well, we are hooked on good service 🙂
WYSIWYG, pronounced as ‘wiz-ee-wig’, editor is a program that allows the developers to have a preview of the end result they have as they create a document or an interface. WYSIWYG is the acronym used from the phrase ’what you see is what you get’. It is a direct contrast to the traditional editors we are familiar of. With those editors, the developers need to enter some descriptive codes and no immediate way of seeing how those codes work.
Bravo, a word processing program, was the first WYSIWYG editor that was considered to be working. Charles Simonyi invented it in 1970s at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. This work has been the basis of his work then at Microsoft where he created two other applications in WYSIWYG known as the Word and the Excel.
WYSIWYG editors are widely used in the technologies today such as in Microsoft Word. Simonyi developed this software with the help of Richard Brodie who is also a software developer. They call this WYSIWYG word processor as Multi-Tool Word. In 1983, it was renamed and became the Microsoft Word that most of us are familiar with. From there, it has gained its popularity and became the word processing software that is widely used globally up until now.
Even in the web technologies, this application has become very famous and useful. The first in the line are the WYSIWYG HTML editors, which was created to make it easier for those who are not well-versed in the HTML language as they edit the interface and build their own site. The first of these editors is the WebMagic by Silicon Graphics in 1995.
As the years passed, a variety of different WYSIWYG HTML editors emerge, each trying to best the one they preceded. A great example of this is the first Microsoft WYSIWYG HTML editor named FrontPage. Another powerful editor of the same kind is that of the Dreamweaver from Macromedia. With this WYSIWYG editors, web developers were able to create a user-friendly environment for their websites in easier ways than doing it hard with codes.
Up to the present, more WYSIWYG editors are emerging in the web technologies. In 2013, Google launched their very own WYSIWYG tool for interactive HTML5 websites building named as the Google Web Designer. It employs animation, Google integration, and interactivity that helps anyone create high quality websites quickly and effectively.
Hubspot’s Inline Editor, openElement and TinyMCEare also great WYSIWYG editors that are making waves in the web technology. WordPress, one of the most popular website developer of today, is also a good example for this technology along with the Squarespace. Most of the independent websites that you can found online are created using these tools.
With them, the individual do not need to be knowledgeable in the field of programming to build interactive and responsive sites for their personal use. These tools are offering them with all that they need to create the appealing and working websites without much effort.
WYSIWYG editors let us edit our website without the need to learn anything about the codes behind. With their easy to use icons and options, we can easily edit whatever content we have on the site without sweating. The necessary codes will just be created by the application itself.

Well, it has finally happened. And honestly, it took much longer than I expected. Google is going to begin penalizing websites that have interstitials on them. What is an interstitial? It is a fancy way of saying pop up. The politically correct version. LOL. So, in January of 2017 Google is going to start to penalize sites that use this technique to increase conversions.
So what is an interstitial? In the old days, websites used to have a pop up. You would go to the website, and a second window would automatically open up that would have an offer or some sort of newsletter sign-up or basically anything the site owner was trying to get you to do on it. These pop-ups became very annoying and people started to use popup blockers. Pop-up blockers were very effective at stopping these pop-ups and pop-ups became a thing of the past. However, recently web developers started to use a different approach to popups. Instead of a pop-up that auto loaded when you hit the URL, they begin using Scripts that would load up a pop up after you are on the site for a particular period of time. Say 3 seconds in. Or once you’ve viewed 2 paragraphs of text, or even when they see you are trying to leave the site and your mouse hovers outside of the browser screen area. This is called an exit intent.
So these new pop ups, would be much more sleek and sexy. They would slowly transition in and dim your screen and then you have no choice but to read the call to action that shows. This would be a newsletter sign-up, a buy today and get a certain percentage off offer, or something similar. And these interstitials work very good. Conversions increased tenfold or hundred-fold. And now you can’t go to a website without a pop up or the fancy way of calling them, interstitials. So this new form of a pop up, it’s better-looking cousin, is now becoming so prevalent that it becomes frustrating. Just as frustrating as the original pop ups of the 90s and early 2000s. So Google decided that these are a pain in the neck, and they don’t like them.
So, we as marketers and internet driven have to decide how we are going to deal with this new Google problem. Do you remove that awesomely converting interstitial or pop up? Or do you “let it ride” and see if your site begins to suffer? Me personally, I always try to err on the side of caution. So for me, I am removing interstitials from my sites. As much as it sucks to be a slave to Google, Google still owns the search market and that is a search engine you want with you not against you.
So, what do you do once you remove your interstitial? I recommend you begin to look at your website’s design, and layout. You are going to have to better utilize the real estate on your site to get that same message across without being obtrusive. And also better utilize your side bars, or if you are in WordPress better utilize your widgets. I recommend Thrive Content Builder for these purposes. Definitely get those contact forms on the side of every page. Make sure the offer stands out in the pages content as well as on the widgets section. Bottom line, is you need to let those people know that there is something special that you want them to realize. And you can’t do it in an obtrusive way. So in your content, utilize some texts with a better call to action. Use different colors for your calls to action. Different sizes of text. You are going to have to advertise your specials within your content as opposed to on top of it.
Do I like this change, yes. Will it make internet marketing harder, yes. Will it make for a better web experience, in my opinion, yes. This brings an end to another “tactic” that frustrates me, but works. Check out Google’s official statement here: https://webmasters.googleblog.com/2016/08/helping-users-easily-access-content-on.html
Google is the internet’s Darwin, and only the strong will survive. So you will have to either get better with internet marketing, or become extinct….
P.S. No red and yellow flashing gifs!!!!
Pokemon Go Creating Foot Traffic For Businesses Nationwide
Skyrocketing to the number one position in the iTunes App store in mere days, Pokemon Go has become an instant sensation around the country and its release into several new countries around the world is now even more highly anticipated. Officially launched on July 5th , the app encourages its users to get outside to “catch” Pokemon, which are viewed through the phone, altering the reality the user sees.
In addition to Pokemon on the loose, this new reality includes things like “Poke Stops” and “Battle Gyms”, located in real places in a user’s town. Pokemon Go is being touted as “more social” than other popular apps like Facebook and Instagram, its users forced to interact or, at least, shout “Red or Blue?” to each other from across a parking lot.
Pokemon Go To The Store
It’s likely you have seen Pokemon Go users out and about in your city, walking through the streets, phones leading the way, as they enthusiastically exclaim, “Sweet! I got a rare one!” Or you’ve seen them gathering outside shops and in parks, organizing battles between their creatures.
At first glance, it might not seem like any of it concerns you (unless you have that rare Charmander in your pocket, of course). But, if you are sitting inside of a store and that store happens to be yours, those millennials out there might have something more than just Pokemon in their pockets.
Cashing In On The Craze
Some local business owners are embracing the increased foot traffic by enticing Pokemon Goers inside their store with special deals and offers. More money? Check. Increased popularity? Check.
Here’s how the most successful shops are cashing in:
1. Use the Pokemon Go app to check if there are any Poke Stops or Gyms close to your location (you’ll see them pop up on the screen as little floating dots)
2. If the app shows you have one of these landmarks nearby, you’re in luck!
3. But just being close isn’t good enough. If you’re not doing something to attract attention to your business, the only thing they are going to see is Pikachu. And, oh my gosh, there’s Ponyta! And Meowth! And Bulbasaur… you get the point
4. To get these Pokemon-obsessed wanderers into your door you need lure them in. No really, make a lure. Yes, it’s a thing. (I’ll wait while you Google it…) You can buy lures within the app for less than a buck and then place them at a pokestop near your store. (Requests are down, but I am sure businesses will soon be able to buy Pokestops)
5. Set the lure on the pokestop and they will come! Well, they’ll gather outside your door. To move them in, you need to get clever with signage and special offers (everyone loves to feel special!) By advertising specifically to the players of Pokemon Go, you will begin to enter their world – and, they will enter yours.
Pizza For Pikachu!
Below are some examples of signs, deals, and offers that businesses are using to catch Pokemon money (don’t worry, it’s the same as real money in this case):
• Water Pokemon Inside. This will get the players in your door.
• Pokemon Are For Paying Customers Only. This guilts players into buying something before they can “catch ‘em all!”
• I Guess We’re A Poke Stop. Come In And Get Your Balls Or Whatever. Acknowledge the players, make them laugh, and sell them once they come in.
• Catch A Pikachu. Get A Pizza. Give players something free for showing you a specific Pokemon and sell them on additional items (“Can I get you a drink with that? Catching Pokemon sure looks hard!”)
• Half Price ________ If You Show My Mom How To Throw A Poke Ball. Compliment the players on their balls (Poke balls, that is) and how well they throw them. Offer them a discount on your items with the highest margins.
Pokemon Go’s users continue to grow exponentially, which means it looks like this augmented reality will be around for awhile. But the early adopters are always the most passionate. Now is the time to advertise to them. Get creative, use a lure, and see how many customers you can catch!
